description
"In the Gulf of Mexico, 32 kilometers northeast of the port of Campeche, rises from the low and swampy sea that forms the coast of the Yucatan peninsula, the small island of Jaina, which was inhabited by the Maya of the Classic period (300-900 A.D.), its name means ""The House on the Water"". The site is widely recognized for its magnificent funerary offerings, which included ceramic vessels and figurines. An outstanding example is this figurine showing a Halach Unich, great lord or civil chief, seated with his waist erect on a circular-based seated throne. His lofty rank is indicated not only by his elaborate and elegant attire, but also by a certain dignity, poise and serenity in his attitude. On his head he wears a large headdress formed by the upper jaw of a snake that shows the palate; the snake carries in turn a plume of short feathers. The status of the character is accentuated by the small evenly trimmed beard that covers the chin. Two parallel threads emerge from the corners of the half-open mouth as signs of facial adornment by scarification. His shoulders are covered by a garment made up of large semi-flat circular beads, placed on a chest with a curved edge and on top of it a rectangular pectoral. The character rests his hands on his knees and with his left he holds a bag for copal, a distinctive element of the priests; the feet, slightly elevated, and the heels on the stool. The back of the body ends with a kind of halo or glow of feathers, similar to the one worn by rulers sculpted on stelae, altars, and lintels. "
