Stephen Frykholm was the first in-house graphic designer at Herman Miller. In 1970, he was asked to design a poster to commemorate the annual company summer picnic, and people loved his Sweet Corn Festival design so much, he was tasked with making a picnic poster each subsequent year.
Herman Miller is known for the care they put into design and Frykholm is no exception. The posters are bold, graphic, and express a distinctly summer feeling. Frykholms picnic poster designs come from a time before computers were synonymous with graphic design and his analog process comes across in his work with posters which feel distinctly printed.
