Metadata

Running shoe metadata is more similar to museum metadata than one might think. The running shoe world has unique terms and controlled vocabularies to allow runners to compare the features of shoes across different brands.

To create a metadata schema for my running shoe collection, I used a combination of Dublin Core and VRA Core elements. The table below lays out each of the elements, their original label, required vocabularies, and whether the element is required or not. I also reamed a few elements to make them more running shoe-specific. Finally, I was very conservative about what fields were required. Running shoes are updated almost yearly so information can become lost and outdated very quickly. I only required fields with information that is commonly found directly on the shoe so catalogers will be able to use this schema even if they are only working with the shoe itself.
