Ontology
VRA Core was used as the primary ontology as the collection consists of highly visual art museum works.
Vocabularies
Creator: These vocabularies were chosen for the creator field. As the collection encompasses works from various artists, two vocabularies were chosen for the most variety in artist names to ensure that all artists could be found.
- Getty: The Union List of Artist Names (ULAN)
- LC: Name Authority File
Location of: Geographic location is an important metadata field particularly for this collection. As the collection focuses on how geographic region and time period can affect visual patterns, it was important to have standardized vocabulary for geographic locations to ensure location information given by institutions for each work was properly translated over.
- Getty: The Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names (TGN)
Material: Due to the nature of the works, especially as they belong to the contemporary art period, this vocabulary was chosen to standardize the various materials used to create these works. Most works in the collection used more than one material and at times, unconventional materials.
- Getty: The Art & Architecture Thesaurus (AAT)
Fields
Custom Fields:
- Birth Date was changed to Artist Birth Year to accurately communicate what the metadata field is representing as the artist's birth year was an important field to note when analyzing the influence of time period on a work.
- Description was changed to Dimensions to allow for a field to describe the overall size of a work.
- Donator was changed to Credit Line to allow for the inclusion of works that were not donated but were given by the artists themselves.
- Access Rights was changed to Copyright to accurately reflect metadata for each work from institution websites.
