About
Why Archive Wu-Dialect Films?
Wu-dialect films preserve forms of speech and local culture that may not survive in standardized Mandarin-language records alone. They capture how people speak, joke, work, eat, travel, perform, and remember place. They also show how Jiangnan culture has been represented in cinema across different decades.
Archiving these films makes a vulnerable regional media history more searchable, teachable, and reusable. By combining film-specific metadata with language standards, this project supports future research in film history, Chinese regional culture, dialect studies, digital humanities, and cultural heritage preservation.
