About the Project
This is a digital collection focused on films and related materials connected to Wu dialects. The project documents moving-image works that preserve Wu-language speech, regional culture, and Jiangnan identity across different historical periods.
The collection includes films that feature Wu varieties such as Shanghainese, Suzhounese, and other regional forms of Wu. These films are valuable because they preserve pronunciation, rhythm, slang, everyday speech, performance styles, urban life, food and local social values. In this way, the archive treats film not only as entertainment, but also as evidence of language, place, and cultural memory.
This project was created in Omeka S as a teaching archive. Its goal is to make Wu-dialect materials easier to browse, describe, and study through structured metadata, controlled vocabularies, and public-facing item records.
