description
Rather than imitating something it is not, this dress becomes a label for itself. The phrase "'LITTLE BLACK DRESS'" runs down one side of the garment, an acknowledgment of that both the phrase—and the garment itself—are a bit cliché. This functions as a reference to and a reversal of René Magritte's 1929 painting, "The Treachery of Images". The boots that accompany the dress are labeled as well; they read "'FOR WALKING.'" This is an allusion to the 1966 Nancy Sinatra song, "These Boots Are Made for Walkin,'" another overused phrase in American culture.
