Title (Dublin Core)
Untitled (Surveillance is your busywork)
Description (Dublin Core)
The present work is an unused New York City subway placard poster for the project on U.S. public transport enacted by Kruger in the 1980s. American conceptual artist Barbara Kruger first released her Surveillance image in 1983, which has appeared in two versions, Surveillance is your Busywork and Surveillance is their Busywork. The design has appeared in a variety of formats including billboards, bus and subway placards, and matchbooks. Known for her combination of type and image that conveys a direct feminist cultural critique, the present work along with the rest of her practice examines stereotypes and the behaviors of consumerism with text layered over mass-media images. Rendered with black-and-white, red accented, Futura Bold Oblique font, inspired by the Constructivist Alexander Rodechenko, her works offer up short phrases such as “Thinking of You,” “You are a captive audience,” and “I shop therefore I am.”
