To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hole infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity in an hour.

I love those flowers in paintings because they are not only artistically rendered by artists, but also applied as the medium to convey emotions or express distinctive styles. This collection contains flower-related works of art from different genres and styles since the eighteenth century; it includes landscape paintings, genre paintings, portraits and sculpture.

The metadata for every piece follows the Dublin Core template, and the Art & Architecture Thesaurus controlled vocabulary was used for standalizing the fields for Format, Subject, Date Created, and Medium.

Description

This is one of more than 35 flower still lifes that Van Gogh painted in Paris in the summer of 1886. He hoped that paintings of flowers would sell well. These were also exercises in the use of colour and a loose style of painting. In this still life, he worked with strong colour contrasts in complementary colours, placing green and red side by side, or blue and orange. Pairs like these form the basis of the colour theory of Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863), an artist Van Gogh greatly admired.
