Introduction

Hundertwasser was many things beyond simply an artist. His artwork and architecture, in all of its various forms, were his mediums to communicate awareness and activism surrounding sustainability, ecology, and humanism. His messages surrounding these topics continue to be timeless, and timely. I first became aware of Hundertwasser while on a trip to Vienna. Seeing the HundertwasserHaus, and exploring the Kunst Haus Wien in person are both incredibly transformative experiences in immersive art-meets-architecture. I believe that studying and circulating his works can continue to contribute to conversations surrounding environmentalism today.

Works represented in this collection are meant to signify both the span of Hundertwasser's career, as well as the wide variety of mediums with which he worked. From sustainable architecture in cities and countrysides, silk screen prints and posters to raise awareness for sustainable action, thoughtful tapestries to inspire inward perspective, and bold, abstract paintings to invoke humanism and acceptance, it is my intention to distill the bredth of his work in order to create access and share with others.
