Midterm Presentation

Why you chose the subject matter and objects for your project

I chose this subject matter because I have admired Peter Hujar’s work for a while, and he has recently received a lot of long due recognition for his work. About 2 years ago I went to an exhibition of his work at the Morgan Museum and Library, and that experience definitely influenced some of the items I decided to include in the project. I also browsed through other collections to get a more concise selection of his work that could include portraits, self-portraits and cityscapes.

Where you found your images and data

I had a good idea of which photographs I wanted to include in the project so I had to look through a variety of sources to find the specific ones I wanted with the relevant data. Most of the images I found where from the Morgan Museum and Library collection, but I also relied on the Peter Hujar Archives, the Modern Museum of Art, The Fraenkel Gallery and the Whitney Museum of Art.

Explain what fields/elements used in your resource template and why you chose them

Identifier

I chose to rename the identifier given after uploading the images from github. I chose the PH for Peter Hujar's initials, and numbered the images 001-010, just in case any other images need to be added in the future.

Title

I used the titles given at the source of each item.

Artist

I renamed the creator field to Artist since it is more relevant to the work created by Peter Hujar. I also used the Getty Union List of Artist Names (ULAN).

Subject

This refers to the topic related to the artwork shown.

Provenance

Because a lot of the works featured here are in different institutions I thought it was relevant to include provenance information. How, where and in what conditions the work was acquired by an institution is included when relevant.

Source

This includes what institution or collection I sourced the work from.

Date

The date in which the work was created.

Description

A brief description of what is depicted in the work.

Medium

The material of the work.

Dimensions

The dimensions of the work. I changed it from format since it is more relevant to works of art.

Type

States what type of artwork it is. I used the Getty: The Art & Architecture Thesaurus (AAT) for this field.

Geographical Location

The geographical location depicted in the work.

Relation

A related resource, in this case I linked it to the Getty's Union List of Artist's Names for Peter Hujar.

Rights

Who owns the rights to the work.

Identify what fields you assigned a standardized controlled vocabulary, which vocabulary did you choose and why.

For creator/artist, as previously stated, I used the Getty's Union List of Artist Names (ULAN) because it provides a consistent presentation of the name of the artist. It helps to use a standardized presentation of an artist's name in terms of accessibility and discoverability.

For Medium I used the Getty's Art & Architecture Thesaurus (AAT) to provide a standardized description of the materiality of the work.

I also used the Getty's Art & Architecture Thesaurus (AAT) for Type, which again allows for the data to be linked to a standardized description of the genre of the work.

Describe your perspective on the object? Are you cataloging as a work or as an image?

All the items featured in this project are catalogued as works of art, because that is how Peter Hujar would have described his work, as well as how the institutions who show his work would describe it.
