Requirements
Why I chose my subject:
I chose this collection in a roundabout way. A few years ago, I took a trip on the blues trail in Memphis and Mississippi, and so I thought I could do a project on the photography in that area of the country. As noted on my summary page, when I thought about Eggleston’s Red Ceiling, I connected it to the recording from Big Star and thought I could do a whole collection on the same premise.
Where I found my images and data:
Once I thought of all the recordings that I would include, I searched and mainly found the images on museum sites, artist websites, and a few were on auction sites from former sales.
Resource Template:
For my resource template I chose most of what CCO recommends in basics such as Title, Creator, Date, Medium. I also added per CCO recommendations the Relation and Is Referenced by which I talk about here: About
I also included Provenance to the best of my knowledge.
Vocabularies:
I discuss my choice of chosen vocabularies also on my about page: About
Items on my site:
All of my items are catalogued as works. I enriched the description for each item to create a connection to the theme of the project.
This was a Lithograph created in 1943 and from what I understand reproduced a few times. I could only a good representation of it on the M.C. Escher website. In my research I did find out that it is in the collection at Herakleidon Museum in Athens, Greece, which I noted in the provenance.
The source metadata was basic from the M.C. Escher website, I added my own description to meet the project.
This is a representation of Richard Serra’s work that’s made, I found out, by pushing paint stick oil through a window screen to get a textural effect. I found this and its data from the MoMA.
I found this master painting from Gerhard Richter from the Art Institute of Chicago and used that for my source. I also added a link to a video of a Christie’s London curator because I felt that I couldn’t give an apt description for what it is.
This photograph was hard to find because it was originally produced in a photobook, but I was able to find a print that sold at auction on the Mutual Art site which is also where I found the data.
This earlier painting from Christopher Wool was also hard to find, but there was a recent retrospective at the Guggenheim, so I was able to track it down on Artsy which is where is got the metadata.
[Body of Anthony Izzo, killed by off-duty policeman Eligio Sarro, New York]: John Zorn
I was very familiar with this photograph and Weegee in general so it was clear to get the metadata and image from The International Center of Photography. Interesting point on this one: The metadata that I used from ICP has the word policeman misspelled as ‘polceman’. I corrected the spelling for this project but I wonder if that is the actual title and if the misspelling was from the actual photo? There is a print at the Metropolitan Museum and policeman is spelled correctly.
Tattoo Parlor: The Rolling Stones
I honestly wasn’t sure if I’d find this image reproduced as a print but was pleased to find it as a gift from Robert Frank to the Art Institute of Chicago which is what I used as the source. There is also a print of this at ICP.
I knew nothing of this artist but found the image in the collection of the National Gallery U.K. Full Disclosure, a music industry friend reminded me of this New Order album, so the art work was quite easy to locate and nothing to dispute as it is a classic piece in that collection.
Greenwood, Mississippi: Big Star
I found the metadata for Greenwood, Mississippi through the Getty Museum, but research for the photograph was through other sites like Artsy and the Eggleston website.
I found and used the metadata for this piece through the MoMA. I did have to google the name of the piece – I only knew it from the record cover.
