metadata

What has my approach been with regard to metadata?

I have mainly used VRA Ontology for most of the metadata fields, except for Dublin Core's "Subject" (VRA Ontology does not have a field that specifically invites the linking of subject headings), Dublin Core's "Title" (unfortunately VRA's "title" field would not show up in the Omeka S headings, which was frustrating), Dublin Core's field called "Contributor" (when applicable), and  Dublin Core's "Class." Dublin Core has a Class field called "Sound" which I felt was the most encompassing, appropriate field for the vast majority of the installations I catalogued. VRA Ontology's closest field to "Sound" would be "intangible" which didn't seem quite right to me. I also used the Dublin Core "Identifier" field for each installation I cataloged.

I appreciate that VRA Ontology is much more attuned to art cataloging needs, so I made use of fields like "start date," "end date" and "place of installation" which are very useful when cataloging sound installations, since they are not installed in one location forever (usually). When given the option between identical fields in Dublin Core and VRA Ontology (like Description and description), I would go with VRA Ontology for the relevant fields.

I have used Getty Art & Architecture Thesaurus for all of the subject headings given that it is an art-focused thesaurus, and have used Getty Union List of Artist Names for virtually all of the artists' names. For specific non-art locations , I used Library of Congress Authorities and Vocabularies.

I created identifiers based on the year they were created and the number they exist as in my own website collection.
