This collection primarily comprises cultural artifacts lost from China during the illegal trafficking or looting that occurred during the 19th to 20th centuries, particularly during the Second Opium War and the invasion of China by the Eight-Nation Alliance.
The majority of these artifacts are currently housed in the British Museum, with additional holdings found in institutions such as the Tokyo National Museum and the Musée de l'Armée in Paris.
