The Leviton Manufacturing Company was founded in New York by Isidor Leviton, at the dawn of the electrical era in 1906. Originally engaged in the fabrication of mantle tips for gas lighting, the Company soon afterwards in 1910, converted to production of a single electrical product — a pull-chain lamp holder (designed for Edison’s new light bulbs). In 1922 the company was moved to Greenpoint, Brooklyn to better facilitate its rapid growth. The original factory took up two city blocks between Newel and Jewel Streets and produced over 600 electrical items, from fuses to socket covers to outlets and switches. Leviton would remain in Brooklyn until in 1975 the company relocated to Little Neck, NY. Leviton Manufacturing Co. sponsored Dan Flavin’s 1970 Retrospective exhibition at The Jewish Museum in New York. Their light fixtures were utilized throughout Flavin's oeuvre.

One type of Peachblow, shading from yellow at the bottom to deep red at the top, was made by Hobbs, Brockunier and Company of Wheeling, West Virginia. It is now called Wheeling Peachblow after the town where it was made. Wheeling Peachblow is a two-layered glass or cased glass. The inside layer is white; the outer layer shades from yellow at the bottom to deep red at the top. Original Wheeling Peachblow was made in two finishes, shiny and satin.

Flavin began working with commercially available fluorescent light tubes in 1963 which were manufactured by Leviton Manufacturing Co. This light sculpture derives its palette from Wheeling Peachblow, a type of Victorian art glass manufactured by Hobbs, Brockunier & Co. in Wheeling, West Virginia, that shades from yellow to deep red, producing a delicate peach color in between.
