As digital archiving in Indonesia continues to develop with limited resources, this project contributes meaningfully to GN's mission while connecting with the Indonesian community. The collection maintains GN's original identification systems while enriching entries with additional research and controlled vocabularies.

Europeana provides access to Dutch colonial trade ephemera from European archives, offering comparative materials that enable this project to analyze how the same products and regions were visually represented in European markets versus local Indonesian contexts. This comparative approach reveals the disparities in representation that characterized colonial commercial relationships.

Van Nelle was a major Dutch colonial plantation operator in the Dutch East Indies. By focusing specifically on Van Nelle's products, the collection maintains a coherent narrative thread while demonstrating how a single company's visual language evolved from colonial to post-colonial periods. These materials reveal how colonial power was exercised not just through economic means, but also through visual representation and commercial imagery.
