Objectives

Georgia O´Keeffe is one of the most famous abstract artists in the 20th century. She's also one of the most inspiring female artists of all time. I admire the dreamy and soothing palette she applied in her artworks. Her romantic relationship with her partner/lover/friend/mentor Alfred Stieglitz is also enviable. I want to use this project to showcase how O'Keeffe's painting style has evolved overtime and some of her photos taken by Stieglitz.

Standardized Controlled Vocabulary

I assigned Library of Congress:All to title, creator, type, medium, subject, rights, contributor, is referenced by. I chose these fields because I noticed data for these fields are usually often used terms or organization names. I chose Library of Congress: All as my controlled vocabulary because it covers most of the terms that I was looking for.

Example: Above the Clouds I

  • Title: Above the Clouds I; Sky Above Clouds I. This artwork has an alternative title, so I added two values for this field.

  • Creator: O'Keeffe, Georgia, 1887-1986

  • Type: Painting. I was looking for “oil painting” as the type but didn´t find it in LC: All. So I decided to go with just “painting” for the item type.

  • Date: 1962/1963

  • Spatial Coverage: 36 1/8 x 48 1/4 in (91.8 x 122.6 cm) Georgia O'Keeffe Museum only provides the artwork dimension in inches. I converted it to centimeters and added to the metadata.

  • Medium: Oil on canvas

  • Subject: Art, Abstract--United States. Due to the nature of abstract paintings, I didn't know how to define the subject when there was no obvious “subject” in the paintings. In this case, clouds and sky might be potential subject matters, however, for data continuity of all items, I decided to use American abstract art as their subject.

  • Rights:Georgia O'Keeffe Museum

  • Contributor: Tom Burnett Family Foundation and Georgia O'Keeffe Foundation. Donors of the artwork. Listed with controlled vocabulary.

  • Provenance: Gift of The Burnett Foundation and The Georgia O'Keeffe Foundation. A brief description of who donate the painting to the museum.

  • Is Referenced By: Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. I found this item and all its metadata from Georgia O´Keeffe Museum´s online collection page.
