Staffordshire potters didn't just make pairs of dogs to decorate Victorian homes: they also made other decorative figures with similar designs, and even some functional objects. Items like novelty begging spaniel jugs (seen below) were a perfect fit for the fanciful, ornamental decorating style of the time.
The potteries produced tobacco jars and similarly shaped bookends and banks, alongside watch holders, decorative clocks, and groupings of dogs and puppies, as shown on this page. The traditional pair of spaniels has become more of a cultural motif, but these objects show fun variations on the theme.
