Front View from Northwest (Pre-dormers), Vander Ende-Onderdonk House, 1903

This is one of the earliest photographs available of the Vander Ende-Onderdonk House. The photograph is from the Austin Collection and can be found in the Brooklyn Public Library Digital Collections. In 1903, the property was owned by Gertrude Onderdonk Schoonmaker. She and her children were the last members of the Onderdonk family to inhabit the house. Soon after this photograph was taken, Gertrude sold the property and moved to Montclair, NJ.

This photograph depicts the house closest to how it looked in the 18th and 19th centuries. The dormer windows have not yet been added on to the gambrel roof, the wood-frame addition appears in its orginal construction, a dirt road stands in place of the side walk along Flushing Avenue, the surrounding factories have yet to be built, and open fields are visible in the background.
